The February 2009 meeting of the Grand Strand Running Club was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at The Grill House in North Myrtle Beach.  I apologize for the incorrect mapquest map for that address on the prelim email. I think everyone found it okay.  Present: Terry Layton, President; Pat Maccariella-Hafey, Secretary;  Jim Troxell, Race Director, and members  Dave Hanson, Paula Loehr, Tim Loehr, Gregg Barnhill, Debra Peters, Rick Lanigan, Karen D'Alessio, Shawn Conti, Julie Dural, Matthew Cutright, Alison Cornett, Alison Hamilton,  Bill Serues, Jane Serues, Joe Tiso, Jane Cole, George Vagalevre, and speaker Alan Connie.

Terry Layton opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Terry congratulated all who participated in MB Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and fun runs.  The marathon was a great success.  Our GSRC booth was well manned and well attended at the marathon expo.  Terry thanked all who helped out.

Jim Troxell reported that as a result of GSRC members volunteering to stuff mail out packets and organize race medals, the club received $2,700.00.  The club also received $100 for the sale of Biofreeze at the GSRC expo booth.

Last month, Terry introduced a plan discussed by Executive Committee for a program for kids to introduce them to running.   The RRCA "Kids Run the Nation" program is an 8 week program.  The Myrtle Beach Middle School 6th grade has signed on to be the first participants.   An 8 week training program will begin in March in time to finish for the Little River Blue Crab 5K.   Sponsors will pick up costs.  Children will receive T shirts and achievement awards and registration for the 5K run. Sponsors will have their logo placed on the back of the shirts.  This will be discussed in future meetings.

Terry announced that an GSRC events calendar for 2009 has been created. He will see about getting this on our website, www.grandstrandrunner.com.

Member Jane Serues offered to investigate starting a women's beginner walking and running program.  If you are interested in particpating in any capacity, please attend  our GSRC Executive Committee meeting on March 4 at 6:30 pm at the Senior Center on 21st avenue north in Myrtle Beach.

Member Bill Serues will be helping with the Antartica Marathon scheduled for March 10 and has offered to speak about that marathon to the club in the future.

Terry introduced Alan Connie, Coach for the Coastal Carolina Track and Field and Cross Country programs.  Alan Connie is in his 23rd season as head coach of  Coastal Carolina University's women's cross country team, his 14th year as the head women's outdoor track and field coach and his 12th year as the head coach of the women's indoor track and field team.  The track and field program was started in 1993.  Alan has had a very successful career at CCU. Many of the accomplishments can be found at the following link:     http://www.goccusports.com/index.html?staff=71 Congratulations Alan!

Alan is excited about the new "Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club."  It is a non profit club which already has 50 members.  Their purpose is to promote training to all. (Womb to the Tomb as Alan puts it).  The Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club will sponsor running clinics, host open competitions and hold monthly meetings. On  Thursday March 19, 2009 they are sponsoring the "Are you the Fastest Kid in Horry County???" competition.  There are four divisions separate 100 meter races and winners for girls and boys. A flyer was passed out at the meeting.  If you would like a copy faxed to you let me know.

The Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club is also is accepting new members. Applications were passed out at the meeting.  The MBTC will not turn away any child due to inability to pay. Additonal documenation may be required.  If you are interested in joining the Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club, I would be happy to fax you a form.  The MBTC also welcomes any volunteer assitance at their activities.

Two important spring break meets are occuring this year. The first is on March 11 and 12 at the CCU Track.   The second meet is the Shamrock Invitational at the Doug Shaw stadium track in Myrtle Beach. If you have not seen the new track, it is pure heaven and probably the best track in the state. If anyone is interested in assisting at these meets please let me know and I will forward your information to Alan.

Don't forget the NMB running group has organized runs on Tuesdays.  Go to http://www.nmbrunninggroup.com/

We want to thank member Tommy Gordon for coaching our half marathon training runs the past few months. All who ran the half were successful and had a great race!

Alison Cornett won the free race entry drawing for any GSRC sponsored race at this meeting.  Congratulations Alison!

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 6:30 pm at the Senior Center in Myrtle Beach.  Olympian and World Record holder Zola Budd Pieterse is tenatively scheduled to speak to the club.

Sincerely,
